Con movies to keep you con-ing back for more

By Shannon McDonald

I thought I’d treat you to a genre extravaganza, where I round up the best gems of each movie genre. This is the first instalment so what better way to get you started, than jump right into things head first with a sub-genre you might not usually think of – con movies!
You can live vicariously through each and every one of these characters as they lie, cheat and steal to get to the top. Hilarity and general debauchery ensues – enjoy!

Here are my top picks to keep you con-ing back for more.

Catch Me If You Can (2002)

If a young Leonardo DiCaprio hasn’t won you over already, try the fact that this little number is based on a true story. That’s right – Catch Me If You Can follows the real life antics of Frank Abagnale Jr as he assumes the identity of a pilot, doctor and lawyer all whilst forging checks and cashing in big time. He soon catches the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) and a cat and mouse hunt commences. This has got to be up there amongst my all time favourites, so if you haven’t given this one a whirl yet – what are you waiting for?

 Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1998)

An oldie but a (damn good) goodie! Steve Martin and Michael Caine have a battle of the wits, as they star as con rivals. This one had me laughing like nobody’s business, as the two men fight to win over the affections of one unsuspecting Janet Colgate (Glenne Headly) and be declared the best con artist in town.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a remake of the 1964 classic Bedtime Story, and was recently remade into a female version in The Hustle in 2019. I urge you to watch one of them or all 3!

 Heartbreakers  (2001)
If you’ve made it this far down the list and are still craving some good old fashioned rom-com goodness, then you’re in luck. The talented Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt are a mother-daughter duo who team up as heartbreakers’ and dupe rich men. It is an intriguing tale of fraud gone bad, with a few laughs and genuine romance chucked in for good measure. It’s a bit cheesy but that’s what I love about it – classic chick flick material that the blokes will enjoy too!

American Hustle (2013)

This is the newest film in the line up, but equally as engrossing with its interesting narrative and lavish visuals. The corruption of the 1970s is on display, as the film delves into the art forgery scene and fraudulent political climate of the time. It is based on the real life FBI Abscam sting operation, where known con artists teamed up with the FBI to take down bigger and badder culprits.

Did I mention, it also has a ridiculously talented star-studded cast (Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence to name a few)?!
